On October 17, 2025, the Maine SWE Professional Section had the privilege of touring the Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMC) at the University of Maine in Orono. We were warmly welcomed by the AMC team and guided through a comprehensive walkthrough of their state-of-the-art facility, where we observed precision machining systems, advanced fabrication tools, robotics stations, and other cutting-edge manufacturing technologies. The visit provided a unique, behind-the-scenes look at how the AMC moves ideas from concept to production through hands-on prototyping, design, and fabrication services for businesses across Maine.
What made the tour especially impactful was the insight we gained into how the AMC supports workforce development and innovation across the region. We learned about its mission to empower entrepreneurs, researchers and students through industry-aligned training, micro-credentials, and applied learning experiences—initiatives that strengthen Maine’s manufacturing ecosystem. The highlight of the visit was discussing recent projects, including automation and robotics implementations, which underscored how the AMC is helping Maine manufacturers adopt Industry 4.0 technologies. We left the facility energized and inspired by the possibilities ahead for collaboration between professional engineers, educators and manufacturing leaders.
